Epicurus once said, “The joy of poverty is the most beautiful thing in the world.” This has become a source of constant inspiration for me. Poverty is very real to me, so is the joy that is derived from my being able to devote myself to the study and the research of computer science.

My father passed away when I was just 14 and, with this, my family was plunged into sudden poverty. In order to save money to allow my younger sister continue her education, I relinquished my expensive undergraduate education and chose to attend a junior college instead, majoring in computer application. For three years, I made extra academic efforts as I had to work part-time to alleviate my family’s financial burden. My GPA was ranked top five in my class, with particularly distinguished performance in mathematics. I was the sole junior college student who participated in the national contest in mathematical modeling for university students in and won the third prize in XX Province. Upon my graduation, I found employment with the Fuel Company of XX Province where I worked as its network engineer and chief manager. What was good about this job was that while it provided me with a stable income it allowed me to receive an on-the-job undergraduate education in computer science so that I ultimately fulfilled my aspiration of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in computer science.

However, the Bachelor’s degree did not put an end to my academic pursuit. Realizing the importance and the necessity to constantly upgrade my professional knowledge in this age of rapid development in information technology, I found a graduate education in computer science would be vital for my further academic and career development. “One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar” I must say that I am genuinely grateful to Helen Keller for articulating what I have long cherished in the innermost recesses of my mind. At the same time I also congratulate myself on having chosen flying as my one-time career, for it has imparted to me both the impulse and the desire to soar in my life.

Ten years ago when I was an undergraduate from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University, or even 5 years ago when I just entered the China Civil Aviation Flight University, I had the stubborn notion that, for the rest of my life, I would stay on the ground working either as a mechanist engaged in mechanical designing and the technical improvement of materials. It never dawned on me that I would transcend all the matter-of-course outcomes resulting from my five-year undergraduate studies to become a pilot of international flights, for at that time the idea had never occurred to me that a person could fly so freely in the infinite universe of his life.

In 1990, I sailed through the highly competitive National University Entrance Examination to become an undergraduate in Tsinghua University. Out of my instinctive interest, I chose to study in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. My 5-year solid studies at this most prestigious university in China allowed me to establish a profound theoretical groundwork in mechanical engineering and to develop an in-depth understanding of mechanical dynamics and its operation principle. In China there is an old custom called one-year anniversary fortune-telling: by the time the new born is one year old, its family prepares a lot of objects of different shapes and functions for it to choose from. The first object that attracts its eyes and hands is supposed to be a symbol of the baby’s future career. Unscientific as it is, it truly predicted my profession and future. At that time the toy car in my hand greatly aroused my wonder at the wheeled monster. As I grew up, I was no longer satisfied with collecting car pictures and making car models. I was determined to be an expert in automobile design and manufacturing. As it turned out, the specialized education I have received in both my undergraduate and graduate programs have fully equipped me for undertaking more ambitious academic tasks in the field of mechanical control.

I know I am no genius and I also know that success is to result from extraordinary efforts. I chose as my starting point Beijing Institute of Technology, one of the 3 universities in China that majored in automobile research. There besides the specialty and theory studies, I made use of my free time to read large quantities of references both in Chinese and English, to catch up with the latest development in theory and to be immersed in the widest range of information. As a graduate, my academic performance had always ranked No.1 in my class, especially for the 20 also specialty courses in the junior and senior years, among which Automotive Manufacturing got full scores. On August 27, , at the Central Institute of the Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energy and self-confidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of the Switching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy in TD-SCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received rapt attention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer and Telecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present, TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA are considered the main technological standards in the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobile telecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy is a key element and technological crux for the TD-SCDMA technology. In retrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobile telecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection that have helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts.

In China, since the TD-SCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for a finer research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such as PC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge. Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practical experience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was only after much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I find a RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antenna has its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas, this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switching process and its failure rate. As a branch of applied science, the science of management has crucial value not only for developing countries like China which are making uttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for the leading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a person like me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective, to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management and to grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.
