Dear _,
Ever since I have had the ability to understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. As a child, I would either be writing, reading or telling stories and ever sine then, have read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts from a variety of genres and eras.
This passion for language has led me to many different extra-curricular activities. For the past four years, I have attended a Youth Theatre each week where we concentrate very much on both improvised and scripted drama but also have done work on stage management, stage make-up, singing, and signed singing (an interest which begun with my learning of both violin and double bass to grade 4 standard).
With this same organisation, I have volunteered for the past three years at one of the children’s groups where I work helping with drama, music and art. It was with this same organisation that I decided to learn Sign Language.I have recently gained my British Sign Language Level 1 certificate and am now beginning a Level 2 course. I began learning Sign Language at the same time as starting my A-Level in English Language and Literature, a course I have found extremely interesting. Taking these two courses concurrently was very exciting for me as learning more about the linguistics of the English Language enabled me to make comparisons between the two languages.
These interests have led me to this course which I not only feel suits my needs and interests aptly, but also excites me in its course content. Although I’ve enjoyed all of my A-Level English Language and Literature course but have found a few parts of it particularly interesting. I specifically enjoyed our coursework tasks for our AS Level as it included writing a piece of original fiction, an aspect of English which I have always enjoyed. I also enjoyed the task of performing a monologue as I have missed not being able to study drama as a subject.
I try to follow my interests outside of school and so attend a wide variety of theatre productions, art exhibitions, musical performances and subject related lectures. When studying psychology last year, I attended a large psychology conference with a variety of speakers which was both helpful and interesting. Last year I also attended an ‘art master class’ organised with Middlesex University and with nine other students, it gave more opportunity for more detailed and involved discussions. I have not yet had the opportunity to attend an English related lecture but look forward to a study day in March which will aid me with my study of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
Alongside this and my voluntary work with the drama organisation, I have worked in a variety of jobs which have all helped to develop my sense of responsibility as they were dependent on both teamwork and co-operation but also my use of initiative.I have chosen to defer my entry to as I plan to complete a voluntary teaching placement in Africa. The prospect of this placement excites me as it will give me the opportunity to travel, to meet new people, to experience new cultures, and, above all, help out where much help is needed. I feel that taking a gap year is going to benefit me greatly as it will enable me to gain valuable life skills that will benefit me both at university but also in whatever I choose to do following university whether it be a postgraduate course or work.
Yours sincerely,

I have always had a keen interest in Mathematics from an early age. Fromstudying Maths at A-Level, I have gained further insight into the practicalapplication of the subject, especially in the “Decision Mathematics” modules. Itis this practical application that has led me to look at other maths-relatedsubjects such as finance, accounting and business. I am especially interested ina course combining maths, with one or more of these applications.
I have always had a logical, organised and practical way of thinking, aswell as a competitive nature, and maths has always appealed to thesecharacteristics. I have always enjoyed the challenging nature of mathematicalproblems, and have a diligent and resilient approach to any problem given to me.I find that discovering the correct answer to a problem, regardless of howfrustrating or difficult the challenge, extremely satisfying. Maths transcendslanguage barriers, and its understanding is vital internationally. This hasalways fascinated me, and I feel passionately about further developing such apriceless understanding
I am fully aware of the unlimited career prospects created by a degree inMathematics, and I find this another reason to study the subject further. I aminterested in a career involving finance andor accountancy. I am currentlylooking further into the full range of careers available to Mathematicsgraduates, and also investigating how maths is used in businesses worldwide. Iattended an open day workshop at PriceWaterhouseCoopers during the summer, whereI took part in team activities and explored every aspect of the business, prompting me to further explore careers in Maths related areas.
Although it is Mathematics that I am specifically interested in studyingfurther, I am also very eager to make use of the skills I have learnt in myother A-Level subjects. I hope that studying Business as part of a Mathematicsdegree will allow me to continue to practice my skills in the subjects ofEnglish and Psychology. I gained the second highest grade in AS English Languagein my college, and believe that my skills in text analysis and looking howlanguage is used in certain contexts, as well as my creative writing expertiseand knowledge of a variety of discourses will benefit me greatly, not only interms of a degree, but throughout my working life. Through my studies inPsychology, I have gained an insight into human behaviour, especially Stress andMemory. These modules have provided me with information into how stress occurs, how it affects individuals differently, and coping strategies, as well as themost effective revision strategies. All of these elements can be hugelybeneficial when put into practice in a university and working environment.
I am currently working part-time as a Customer Service Assistant for WickesBuilding Supplies. During my time with the company, I have gained a Btec inCustomer Service, as well as an award for outstanding performance. My job roleinvolves cash handling, serving customers, and dealing with customer enquiriesand complaints, both in person and over the phone. Working so closely with thepublic has increased my confidence, and my interpersonal skills as well asgiving me an insight into how businesses, especially the retail business, work.
I often have to apply my mathematical skill in my job, for example, whenworking out measurements and quantities for projects, and also converting unitsof measurement, as well as putting into practice ways of increasing sales andprofits.
Outside college, I enjoy socialising, going to the gym and rehearsing, writing and performing with my band. I have also recently provided tuition foryounger children in playing the guitar, which involved me developing skills Ihad never had to use before. Performing with my band has increased my confidencelevels, and I know feel very comfortable with speaking out, and entertaininglarger audiences.

Dear _,
A fourth-year student grounded solidly in the basics of computer science, I am writing in pursuit of graduate studies that I hope can help me acquire cutting-edge expertise in software programming in general and parallel processing in particular.
Intrigued by the power of the computer since high school, I have been trying to stay on top of the computer science by concentrating my undergraduate studies on those subjects that underpin the discipline, particularly mathematics and electronics. To build up my solid knowledge in these subjects, I have taken virtually all the related courses that the university has had to offer. These courses include Algorithm & Data Structure, Mathematical Modeling, Network Theory, Digital Circuit, Discrete Mathematics, and Electric Circuit. With a sophisticated understanding in these areas, I have been well positioned to appreciate the basic theories of computer science and their applications to software development.
Aided by the firm command of the basics, I have found it not only easy but also exciting to study the various subjects covered by my major. As most of my classmates, I took a variety of courses ranging from AI to Computer Network, from AI Programming to Knowledge Engineering, from Pattern Recognition to Software Engineering, and from Database Design to Programming Language Design. But I distinguished myself by my academic record, which places me as one of the very top students in my class. My grades in these course never went below A or B. I have also stood out as one of the few who have taught themselves Real Time System and Computer Graphics.
Armed with sound training in the basic theories and applied technologies, I have been able to move on into deeper and wider areas of computer science. Early in my university life, I began to understand that the modern computer's base, the Turing machine, was reaching its limits in AI. Gradually, I have narrowed down my research interest to parallel & distributive computing, which I understand can significantly boost the performance of personal computers by giving them some of the functions of mainframe computers.
Of all the areas of computer science, parallel processing fascinates me the most. The term first came to me when I read the book Computer Organization & Design: the Hardware/Software Interface as part of my Computer Architecture course. By teaching me how the performance of computers can be improved through pipelining and parallel processing, the book reshaped my thinking in computer science.
My lab experience deepened my understanding of parallel processing. In my third year, I worked on a GIFT project with Dr. Komatsu, chief researcher of IBM Tokyo Research Laboratory and Dr. Koseki, one of Dr. Komatsu's colleagues. The project was to introduce the architecture supports that can allow compilers to derive more parallelism from programs. These architecture supports include three designs, a conditional execution mechanism to execute instructions without normal conditional jump instructions, speculative execution mechanism, and a dynamic memory disambiguation mechanism to execute memory access instructions simultaneously.
As undergraduate students seldom get to be involved in actual research, I took full advantage of the opportunity of working in the lab. I particularly enjoyed the seminars held twice a week as part of the lab work. At these seminars, I engaged in in-depth discussions with Master's students under Dr. Komatsu's seasoned guidance. The lab experience is adding weight and insights to my graduation paper An Improvement of Software pipelining using Loop Transformations. In this paper, I will introduce a translation algorithm using loop interchange and loop skewing. This algorithm can minimize the initiation interval of loop nest to improve the performance of software pipelining.
Through my lab experience and other research, I have developed a long-term professional objective: the advancement of the parallel processing technology. While I have strong faith in this technology, I also know its limitations as it is today. Some sequential algorithms can't be easily translated into fast parallel algorithms and most compilers can only distribute works on one platform. Another unsettled problem is that programming parallel computers is now still a manual work. But even the modern language (like Java, C++) can do some automatic translation work. If a compiler can be developed to translate and distribute work into different platforms, personal computers will be able to work like mainframe computers at a fraction of the mainframes' costs. This will make it possible to connect all the computers in the world and speed up all the processes.
To help take the parallel processing technology beyond what is capable of today, I have to undertake more advanced studies. This, I believe, can only be accomplished in a quality graduate program like yours. I plan to pursue a master's degree with a concentration on paralleling and distributing compilers, operating systems or computer networks, a combination thereof. With the training that goes into such an advanced degree, I think I will be able to take great strides towards fulfilling my professional objective. When I do, I think I will be standing on the cutting-edge of the computer science.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
In China as in the _, one can easily give up the career of a language teacher to become a lawyer or a businessman. I, however, gave up a promising legal and business career to become a language teacher, but I have never regretted it. In fact, the more I teach, the more committed I am to teaching. But not just teaching. Having battled with China’s traditional mode of teaching for several years, I now would like to help improve teaching in China by introducing new and more effective instructional technology and media into the country. For that, I would like to pursue an advanced degree in education in your country.
Now an English teacher at the training center of the China National Container Corporation, I graduated in 1995 from the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, where I majored in business law. At this highly respected higher-learning institution, I received broad training that was both rigorous and vigorous. After four years of undergraduate studies, the strong logic inherent in law translated into strong logic in my thinking. With the knowledge and skills I attained in the law program, I boast the kind of intellectual maturity that would help me whatever I do. But law was never my first choice for a profession.
Starting from my high school days, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. In the second year of high school, we once had to write an essay on the topic “what do you want to do when you grow up”. I proudly wrote, “I want to be a teacher!” But my parents shattered my dream by insisting that I pursue another profession. My father, an engineer with a Ph. D. degree, and my mother, a university teacher of English, had their reasons. Chinese teachers, particularly those teaching at the primary and secondary levels, are poorly paid and begrudgingly respected. Being young and inexperienced in the world, I acceded to their wishes when I was choosing my major for the university.
But my passion for teaching was not to be stifled forever. Giver any opportunity, it would burst out. Upon graduation with an LL. B. Degree, I first took up the position of a supervisor with the China National Container Corporation in charge of its Overseas Sales Department. As the job entailed frequent translation and interpretation between Chinese and English, I persisted in improving my English proficiency by attending various training courses and learning it on my own. My command of the foreign tongue became so good that, after about one year, I began to teach it to my colleagues on a full-time basis at the company’s training center. After a huge detour, my career finally got back on track.
What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is that it is a learning experience. I enjoy it the most when my students ask difficult questions, particularly questions that I have to think long and hard to answer. I also enjoy posing questions to students, but my questions are never intended to intimidate the students or even test their knowledge but rather designed to stimulate their minds. In the constant exchange of questions and answers, students and teachers improve themselves alike to the credit of the old Chinese saying: To teach is to learn. In my three years of teaching, I really have learned a great deal.
One of the things I have learned is the ability to not only deal with but also strike an accord with people of different backgrounds. My students at the training center are all adults accomplished in a variety of roles and professions. In most cases, they are older than I am. While I stand as their equals, I have served as their mentors and role models the same way as most teachers do their students. By so doing, I have won their trust and confidence in what I teach, which has helped to make my teaching powerful and effective.
To take full advantage of my teaching skills, I started in October to teach English and other subjects at the primary school I attended when I was a child. As the children I teach are at the age when I studied here, I am particularly sensitive to their needs and appreciative of their potential. Together with other teachers, I designed various training programs in calligraphy, art, writing, mental calculation, and English, programs that combine learning with entertainment. The kids n my class are now learning more and faster thanks to the fun they find everyday in my programs.
Entertainment is, however, by no means just a ploy I use to sweeten the bitter pill of learning for the children, but rather has its own intrinsic value. While kids can hardly learn well without being able to have fun, the lack of fun hurts more than the kids’ ability to learn. It can impair the kids’ emotional and psychological health to an extent that no amount of knowledge and skills drab teaching force-feeds into them can make up. Entertainment is therefore part and parcel of what we teachers have to provide to children if we are to help them grow up into productive members of the society. The way I see entertainment, it should be considered an end in education.
As China’s education is oriented overwhelmingly towards helping kids pass exams, entertainment is about the least on the mind of an average teacher or principal. In the rush to produce super kids as measured by the grades out of exams, the purpose of education is lost all too often. The curriculum is limited to subjects covered by mandatory exams. Students are seldom encouraged to come up with original ideas. Interaction between teachers and students is kept at a minimum in the classroom. The teachers compete to heap homework on the students, as do the parents. While everybody is tired to death, few kids get armed with the ability to take initiatives or solve real-world problems. It is high time that fresh approaches were brought in.
One of the ways to make a change to the Chinese classroom is to utilize new technologies and media of teaching. School authorities in China, as those elsewhere, increasingly realize the importance of computerization, and many of the better-off schools in China are already stacked with state-of-the-art computers. But reports say only a tiny fraction of those computers are adequately utilized. The situation with other educational technologies and media is no better. They are either absent from the school sitting or vastly under-used. Few Chinese teachers have acquired the know-how or the drive to make use of these modern facilities.
I therefore would like to pursue first a master’s degree and then a Ph. D. degree in instructional technology and media in the United States, where the use of modern educational facilities is undoubtedly the most advanced in the world. Judging by the information I have culled from your, website I think your institution is an American leader in the research and studies of this field. I am anxious to study under the seasoned guidance of your distinguished faculty. I hope that, after I complete my advanced training in your program, I can be a much more effective teacher in China, one that sets an example for all other Chinese teachers.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear_University teacher:
Hello! I am ___ and I am studying at ___. Thank you for reviewing my application for studying abroad in your busy schedule.
_University, with a galloping horse as its symbol, I hope that the students can “tighten the sky and dive into the abyss, and breathe into the river; the vast wilderness, one-time Mercedes-Benz”, the broad and lofty pursuit makes me eager and fascinated. I aspire to be a student of _ university.
Because of my excellent ability in mathematics, I went to elementary school when I was 5 years old. In 20_, our family came to Beijing and started my 8 years of study in ___ school. Over the past 8 years, __ has witnessed my bit by bit progress. Before I came to Beijing, I didn't know anything about English, but my alma mater was an international school, so my English made teachers and parents very anxious. Later, with the help of my parents and teachers, I have been working hard to improve my English. Now English has become one of my strengths. When I was in the junior high school, my grades were not very good. After three years of unremitting efforts in junior high school, I finally entered the high school experimental class of our school with a score of 523 points in the high school entrance examination (the city's key line at the time). In the first year of high school, my grades were at the forefront of the class and grade. I participated in the Haidian District Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry Competitions, and won the national third prize in the 20th National Mathematics “Hope Cup” Competition. After entering the second year of high school, I maintained the first grade and first grade in all examinations (including monthly examination, mid-term final examination, weekly examination of high school, and district unified examination), and the results of all subjects in the entire high school grade were all A. I think that as long as you have a serious attitude towards learning and always strive to surpass yourself, you will surely be successful. Moreover, I can treat the exam rationally and continuously improve my learning ability, thus maintaining a stable and upward state. I will continue to maintain this state in my future study and life.
I was born in a democratic and open family. Both my parents are teachers, giving me a certain free development space, and focusing on cultivating my comprehension ability, learning ability and practical ability, so that I can learn to be independent. So when I encountered difficulties in life, study, communication and getting along with others, I thought of ways to solve them independently, and became a class and grade leader in all aspects. Due to the subtle influence of my parents, I am very serious in doing things and I am used to pursuing perfection. Although it is impossible to be perfect, the attitude and will to pursue perfection make me have an outstanding performance in study and work.
As shown in the school motto “_”, my alma mater ___ school not only upholds the rigorous and pragmatic traditional education, but also promotes the military management of boarding schools and incorporates the openness and efficiency of foreign education. It is in this environment that I have a wealth of knowledge, diverse abilities, strong perseverance and a cheerful personality. In the __ years of my study career, I have become more mature and stable, meticulous and thoughtful, and become a person who has excellent learning, is good at handling all aspects of affairs, and has all-round development.
I think I am a cheerful, confident and generous girl. I have been a class cadre since I was a child, serious and independent, and have strong organizational and leadership skills. After entering high school, I was honored to serve as the perimeter of the grade level, and I have been serving it up to now. Under my leadership, the students on duty carefully check the hygiene of each class and supervise the students' compliance with school rules and disciplines. With our joint efforts, grade hygiene and discipline have been highly praised by the school. After the mid-term exams of the second semester of the second year, I took over as the monitor. I actively cooperated with the teachers and managed the class in an orderly manner. I have performed well in many activities. In terms of discipline, our class is even in the middle of the grade. The outstanding person of the school has won many honors of the school's “Excellent Class Collective”, and I have also been awarded the title of “Excellent Class Leader” and “Three Good Student” by the school and Haidian District. I have also spoken on behalf of many times, organized and presided over several major events, and actively participated in various social practice activities and volunteer activities (approximately 120 hours in total). In these processes, I exercised myself, improved my abilities in many aspects, and learned how to learn and work efficiently to make myself more comprehensive.
I like computer programming and creative production. When I was in junior high school, I used to program code locks, answerers, countdown timers and other works, and I was fortunate to have published a related article. As a result of participating in robotics, single-chip programming and work competitions and getting excellent results, I got extra points for science and technology in the high school entrance examination.
If I can enter the university, I will be able to understand the mindset of “Tengtianqianyuan, Shui Nachuanhai; vast wilderness, a Mercedes-Benz” mind, I will be very honored. I applied for the ___ major. I will definitely study various courses seriously, and strive to become engaged in human resource management, corporate planning and design, advertising and marketing planning, investment and financial consulting, psychological consulting and treatment, and psychology teaching and research And other high-quality compound professionals. And will strive to become a member of the student union, try to work during the holidays, enrich their experience, and develop themselves in an all-round way.
I implore the teachers in the admissions office of your school to accept my application. I will certainly not disappoint your expectations!
Sincerely
salute!

Dear teacher:
Hello! I am a student from __ First Middle School. I have been struggling with my “dream” for many years. Today I dedicate this hidden poem to the school to show my admiration and love for __. Thank you also for sharing my many years of struggle in your busy schedule.
1. In the spring breeze, I am full of spirits!
The admiration should start from the first year of high school. The accidental saying “I passed the exam!” left a deep mark in my heart. I envy the rhetoric after the success and envy that place. An ideal institution, I am more envious of the “_person” temperament that seeks truth from facts, and I am still moving forward in the wind and rain. Since then, I secretly planted the seed that will eventually germinate in my heart-Xiang_Struggle!
2. In the wind and rain, I am still moving forward!
Since I was young, my parents have attached great importance to the cultivation of all aspects of quality. However, due to the backwardness of the living area, there is no good learning conditions to exercise myself, but this has not stopped my desire for knowledge. Every holiday, the president will drive away to study as a teacher. After several years of hard work, I was admitted to No. 1 High School with the third place in the city’s high school entrance examination in 20__, and entered the experimental class, which made me come here from a small, backward and blocked county. The provincial model high school has opened up a broader space for my future development and progress. However, the road ahead is not always smooth sailing. Due to the differences in regional education levels, coupled with the unsuitability of high school learning, he lost his name in the first exam in the first year of high school, and only ranked more than 300 in the grade. This is undoubtedly a bolt from the blue for me, who has always been among the best. Looking at the lagging results in my hands, thinking that I might roll out the results of the test class, the pressure that has been accumulated in my heart for a long time, and the deep hurt of my self-esteem, suddenly turned into a line of tears from my eyes. With the rustling autumn breeze and heavy air, the originally lively campus seems to be my own. But I did not give up because of this, but carefully analyzed and summarized the reasons for my failure;
Always thinking that as long as you work hard, you will succeed,
I always think that the most beautiful moment is the blooming,
It's a pity, I'm just me, an ordinary self
Ignore my true ability
I ignored the phrase “success requires one step at a time”
If you really live forever in one second,
Why do we need to spend our whole life relative
Look back and brighten your eyes
See who you really are,
Steady steps, deep footprints,
Only then will we shed tears of success!
At that moment, I couldn't help but think of _'s school motto, “Seek truth from facts” in learning and being a man, and not in a hurry for success. As Principal Zhu said back then: “If you encounter a situation of reversal, but you are unyielding, not afraid of power, just asking right and wrong, regardless of interest.” At that moment, I regained my confidence, raised my forehead high, and let me go. Tears flowed back to my eyes, I set off with a smile, and walked in the brightest direction! With solid confidence as the backing and correct learning methods as guidance, my results will always be among the best in future exams. I think that this kind of summary and tenacious fighting spirit is also an essential quality for every “_person”.
3. Under the sun, I thrive!
At the beginning of the first year of high school, with my good personal temperament and the trust of the head teacher, I served as the monitor of the class. I kept learning and making progress in every class work. From immature and simple to mature atmosphere, from mischievous and self-willed to steady and optimistic, from blindly working hard to learning to unite and cooperate with others, and be proactive, I have left the footprints of my growth everywhere inside and outside the classroom. With my outstanding performance in the first year, I have stood out in the new round of selection of assistant principals in the second year of senior high school. I have entered a broader learning world, assisted the principals in managing school affairs, and not only exercised my working ability in my work. , And cultivated my work style of seeking truth and being pragmatic, serious and responsible, and bold and innovative. Due to his outstanding work ability and excellent academic performance, he was named “Outstanding Student Leader of the Autonomous Region” in ____.
4. In the morning light, I am full of confidence!
“There will be long winds and waves, and you will hang the clouds and sail to the sea!” If you dare to think about the need and dare to do, you will succeed if you dare to do it. I will definitely be admitted to the ideal university in my heart——_, and continue my journey of chasing dreams. In the university, I will choose a science and engineering major, concentrate on research, seek truth and innovation, and make every bit of knowledge meticulous and refined. We must also strive to be a new-age talent with both German and German talents, comprehensive development, useful to the country and the people, while striving to learn his major, at the same time, to improve his comprehensive quality in all aspects, and actively participate in various social and campus activities. Activities to further explore their potential in music. At this moment, I look forward to a wider world waiting for me to make the next flight. I believe that in this brand new university campus, I can become friends with many students from different regions. Discussing life together, learning together, this will be a joy in my life.
Here, I solemnly send an application to _, please accept me, a dream chaser who has been yearning for_, today_give me a hope, and tomorrow I will return a glorious!
Sincerely
salute!

Program Applied: Marketing Management
In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitive edges over one's adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fierce competitions depends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factors of intelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions and perspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will have the greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventual materialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches is management. As a branch of applied science, the science of management has crucial value not only for developing countries like China which are making uttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for the leading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a person like me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective, to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management and to grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.
As a Master's student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies, I am very proud to report that I have made some encouraging research achievements. Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategic development of enterprises-Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on Resource Complementarity and The Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for Chinese Enterprises in International Operations in the New Millennium, the former has been published by Economic Tribune in Sept. and the latter has been accepted for publication by China Economists in Feb. . These two research papers are the fruition of my active involvement in a research project named Study on Chinese Enterprises' Cooperation-Competition Models in Hyper-Competitive Conditions, which is sponsored by China State Natural Science Foundation (Foundation Project No. 70140132)。 Another paper entitled Brand Marketing: A Competitive Mode on a Higher Level in Modern Economics has been published by Contemporary Finance & Economics in November this year. Those research achievements can unmistakably indicate my tremendous potential to perform much more ambitious researches in my future degree program and I am determined to develop this potential to the fullest extent.
I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and Management Science as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduate education that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management as my lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of some courses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rather superficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken of knowledge and broadened my vision.
In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity of academic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among Peking University, Central Finance and Economics University, and China Renmin University on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country's leading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an important supplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected with the realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from my extracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices of the School's Students Union, I planned and organized the School's Festival of the Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor our university's basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improved my organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduate program was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various applied subjects-higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (in which my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of 30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledge and in the application of mathematical tools.
From Sept. to April , my employment with Hisense Group in QingDao City, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electrical appliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. The second year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened to China's electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices of their products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their market share. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I worked launched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four key personnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions in most major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable market effects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our sales of televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in 2000. In that year's performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group's Model Employee.
My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-year practical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of such elements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior both of your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brand management, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic education would contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater in September 2000 and went on with a Master's program in Engineering and Management Science in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow the most updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.
Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and I was more self-motivated in my studies. With a comprehensive coursework covering advanced mathematical planning, decision-making strategies, management statistics, and fuzzy mathematics, I achieved obvious improvement in theoretical knowledge and in the application of tools. I developed broader perspectives and was able to conduct my research from more advanced professional levels. My thesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises' Strategic Alliances Based on an Analysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation of corporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspective which differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholars which explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from the angle of transaction cost and value chain.
Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master's program (3.6), I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in the field of management, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treat marketing purely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis nor opportunities for students to practice the theories they have learned. In terms of curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior have hardly been undertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted in insufficient analysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficiencies can scarcely be overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a more successful career must be pursued through a Ph.D. program outside China, ideally in a first-rate university in the United States.
With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and management science, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your Ph.D. program: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing or consumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. I have also drawn up my tentative career objective. I will complete my doctoral program by undertaking extensive researches and carrying out some specific projects. After obtaining my degree, I will seek some teaching experiences in an American university while continuing with advanced researches on the latest research topics. In this way I can keep developing my academic aptitudes. After accumulating sufficient teaching and research experience, I will seek a teaching position in a prestigious university in China where I will share with my future students and colleagues my research findings and the knowledge I have acquired in the United States. I hope to develop myself ultimately into a leading specialist in marketing and management who can contribute to bringing Chinese scholarship in this field onto a more advanced level.
CMU's Ph.D. program in computer science is heavily integrated with research activities and is designed to nurture people with raw talent and intellect in an environment which permits them thorough immersion in research and coursework. The program promises to produce well-educated researchers and future leaders in computer science. I am very excited over this wonderful vision because such a program offers me a basis to translate my dreams into realities. Without such a program, many of my dreams will remain mere fantasies.

Program Applied: Computer Science
Epicurus once said, “The joy of poverty is the most beautiful thing in the world.” This has become a source of constant inspiration for me. Poverty is very real to me, so is the joy that is derived from my being able to devote myself to the study and the research of computer science.
My father passed away when I was just 14 and, with this, my family was plunged into sudden poverty. In order to save money to allow my younger sister continue her education, I relinquished my expensive undergraduate education and chose to attend a junior college instead, majoring in computer application. For three years, I made extra academic efforts as I had to work part-time to alleviate my family's financial burden. My GPA was ranked top five in my class, with particularly distinguished performance in mathematics. I was the sole junior college student who participated in the national contest in mathematical modeling for university students in and won the third prize in _ Province. Upon my graduation, I found employment with the Fuel Company of _ Province where I worked as its network engineer and chief manager. What was good about this job was that while it provided me with a stable income it allowed me to receive an on-the-job undergraduate education in computer science so that I ultimately fulfilled my aspiration of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in computer science.
However, the Bachelor's degree did not put an end to my academic pursuit. Realizing the importance and the necessity to constantly upgrade my professional knowledge in this age of rapid development in information technology, I found a graduate education in computer science would be vital for my further academic and career development. With due efforts in preparing for the entrance examination, I succeeded in enrolling in University of _ where I specialized in Computer Science and Application at the Faculty of Computer Science. Through my undergraduate and graduate programs, I have achieved the top third rankings in my overall GPA, laying a solid academic foundation through impressive performance in such core courses as Advanced Computer Network, Internet Technology, Multimedia Network Communication, Computer Science's Logic, Advanced Computer System Infrastructure, and Computer Network Infrastructure. This academic foundation makes possible my determination to become a computer specialist in my future career.
While making conscious efforts in my coursework, I have paid even greater attention to the improvement of my R & D ability. In the WLAN project for the _ Mansion, I collected extensive technical materials and made in-depth study of the WLAN technology. I independently designed the project plan that satisfied the particular needs of the client. In view of the inherent insecurity of WLAN, I proposed the security solution application to small-size business patterns. When evaluating the project, the relevant experts gave positive comments on my plan design, rating it as “technologically advanced, with reliable performance, and can provide guidance to the R & D work in relevant fields, and applicable to similar projects.”
In another two projects-the development of the Computer Information Management System for both the Dean's Office and for School of Further Education of University of _, I conducted comprehensive research concerning network security technology, in particular the firewall technology. By undertaking extensive testing against the Ddos attacks, I gathered a large amount of first-hand data. Based on my experiences in those two projects, I have published four research papers, including The Standards of Firewall Procurement and the Prospect of Firewall Technology, in the national core journals and university journals like Computer Application Research. All of them have been well received.
Over the past few years, as a key project member, I have participated in, organized and implemented a total of 12 projects which involve financial software, MIS, network management system, e-commerce, industrial control and other fields. I have published a total of 10 research papers in a series of technical journals and my research achievements have captured the attention of the computer experts from the _ provincial academia. Last year I was invited to attend the 2002 International Symposium on Picture and Graphics in_ City.
Currently, I have come to the final stage of my Master's dissertation entitled Research on the WLAN Security Solution and its Realization. In this dissertation, I focus on the security mechanisms of WLAN, proposing that _ as a security solution can only be an alternative and that only the application of the true “point-to-point” mechanism can maximize network security at reasonable costs. My dissertation has an overall theoretical framework, supplemented by detailed plans and designs. In my repeated discussions with my supervisor concerning my dissertation, he has given his full support of my propositions. He has given special praises on my ideas regarding the renovation and development of the existing computer technology.
While perfecting my ability to carry out independent R & D projects, my past research experience has also enabled me to ferret out my own research interests for the future-Wireless Networking and Network Security. WLAN is one of the most important issues in the theoretical research and technical development of present-day computer science and its security mechanism is the key point. I have 4-year work experience as a network engineer and taught six courses on network and Internet technology. In my Master's program I have concentrated on computer network and distributive system and my dissertation is on WLAN and its security mechanism. For each of those two concentrations, I have participated in two research projects, thus I have adequate practical experience. In my 10 research papers, 6 are concerned with those two major fields, which fully testify to my theoretical buildup and my important research potential. All those constitute my important assets for more advanced academic pursuit, in which I expect to exploit them to the fullest possible extent.
I wish to apply for a Ph. D. program in computer science from your esteemed university because your program satisfies my wish for a full development of my research interests. My past education and research experience has fully convinced me that, as home of the world's modern computer science and technology, the United States is the ideal country that offers the advanced education and training that I am seeking. There, I will be exposed to the instructions of world famous scholars and experts whose academic ideas will significantly broaden my academic horizon. Equally important is that I can enjoy an inexhaustible variety of library resource. In conclusion, I deem myself fully qualified and well prepared for your Ph. D. program and it is my belief that your university is precisely the starting point of my new and rewarding academic journey.

Dear _,
I first realised I wanted to study Psychology when studying Drama, because in order to portray characters I had to understand their mind and develop their personality. I found the differences in characters were so vast that it made me want to understand these variations. Since beginning the course in College I have been truly captivated by all areas of psychological theory and research, and am eager to contribute to the understanding we have about the behaviour of human and non-human animals. In particular, I am fascinated by the fundamental debates in Psychology, for example the nature nurture debate. A Forensic and Investigative Psychology conference I attended, presented by Professor David Canter, caught my attention as I found it intriguing that people can behave in such a way that will offend others and often feel little or no remorse. After reading his book, “Mapping Murder”, my interest in abnormality and psychopathology rapidly increased, as his book and conference allowed me to understand the psychology behind this type of behaviour, amplifying my interest in the subject. I enjoy reading about different studies that have been conducted in the past, which I can analyse and evaluate to obtain a more advanced understanding of behaviours exhibited.
As a peer mentor, my job was to attend to the needs of younger or more vulnerable students and to offer them full support. This job requires patience and compassion, along with willingness to help and motivate others. I have received certificates and awards for good behaviour, attendance, punctuality and performing arts, demonstrating my enthusiasm in everything I do. My work experience in the retail industry has given me the chance to develop critical skills which are essential such as; good communication with others, a strong determination to achieve my best and dedication to all work I undertake. As an A2 Psychology student, I received the Student of the Month award for my outstanding enthusiasm, effort and achievement. Drama & Theatre Studies has given me an alternative perception of human behaviour, the intensity of emotions and the variations inherent in that. Music Technology has helped me develop my analytical and concentration skills. I am also a member of the Student Council, where I represent my fellow students and have a great responsibility to ensure that their views are heard and acted upon.
I enjoy reading a range of books from novels to biographies as well as books to support my academic studies. Currently I am reading “The Selfish Gene” by Richard Dawkins to support my understanding of Evolutionary Psychology. I find it fascinating that natural and sexual selection can provide ultimate explanations for the behaviour of animals, including humans. I also enjoy sports, such as swimming, cricket, tennis and hockey, resulting in my competitive nature and desire to succeed. I have had a variety of part time jobs in which I have had to work with the public and satisfy their needs whilst working under pressure to complete assorted tasks. Although I am looking forward to going to university, I have decided to take a gap year and hopefully attend Camp America, where I would work with young people as a Counsellor, ensuring their health and safety, and keeping them entertained. My role will depend on my ability to have strong authority but also an approachable manner at all times and I am confident I can carry out the role with the utmost professionalism. I am eager to study Psychology in as much depth as possible, and I intend to practise a career in the fields I am particularly interested in - Clinical and Pathological Psychology. I believe that I will make an outstanding undergraduate who will appreciate having the opportunity to study and expand my knowledge in a reputable learning environment.

Dear _,
Since I was very young I have always been interested in accounting and finance and how they operate. In China, my favourite TV programme is the finance programme and I enjoy international finance. I frequently worked in my mother's company to help the staff in the accounts department. All of these have given me an understanding of accounting and finance
My passion for the subject expanded when I chose accounting as part of my A-level programme. Although this subject is somewhat demanding, I find it extremely interesting. I believe this is the right choice for me. I am confident that a course in accounting and finance satisfies my interest. I am looking forward to learning more of accounting in my A-level course
In my spare time I enjoy playing basketball. I play once or twice a week with my friends. I also like to listen to music. I think that playing basketball can help me to increase the team spirit and music can help me relax. Also while I was working as a cleaner in Downing College at Cambridge University, I believe that I gained invaluable experience in dealing with the boss and trying to deliver colleague satisfaction, whilst learning to work effectively and efficiently in a well-structured team. Hopefully I will be able to get this kind of opportunity to work whilst at university. I enjoy my spare time and try to use it effectively
I consider myself to be a hard working outgoing individual. I still have some shortcomings. For example, I am a little bit disorganised sometimes. But I have known this and I am trying to correct it. I have made a timetable to organise my daily life. I am looking forward to the challenge of university life, both socially and mentally. I strongly believe that my years at university will be enjoyable and those that I will remember for the rest of my life. Most of all I am hoping that my chosen subject will give me a strong foundation for a successful career.

Dear _,
Countless dreamers have looked to the sky, their thoughts fixed on flying. The Wright brothers’ powered flight initiated men into a realization of that dream. I, too, found myself with a very personal and enthusiastic dream of flying as a boy. As a participant in a model plane tournament in elementary school, I found the joy of making a model plane and tinkering with it to find the perfect form. This boyhood pastime fostered my decision to major in aeronautical and mechanical engineering in one of the best engineering schools in Korea, Hankuk Aviation University.
There I embraced numerous opportunities, encountering real aircraft and delving into introductory flight theory. From basic mechanics of aircraft to simple airplane design, the more I learned about my major, the more I wanted to learn. A natural extension of this burning curiosity remains to enter your renowned graduate program in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
My preparation for your program has been expansive and thorough. First, I have a solid background in aeronautical and mechanical engineering. Additionally, during my undergraduate years, I joined a club called Information Process Research (IPR) focused on computer programming. Our projects dealt with visual C++, AutoCAD, and other software tools. My work outside the classroom, in job placements through Hankuk Aviation University, granted me excellent opportunities for real-world experience. This led to my associate membership of the Korea Aeronautical Engineers’ Association.
While exploring the possibility of graduate-level work, I discovered that my interests are perfectly matched with your program. My interest in flight mechanics and control, especially, was piqued during my flight control and automatic control systems class. The aspects of the control system fascinated me and made me long to supervise a large project in this field one day. Although I realize my current limitations, my whole-hearted enthusiasm, combined with guidance from your exceptional faculty, will carry me through the rigors of studying and forge me into an expert control systems engineer after the two year M.S. coursework and the subsequent Ph.D. courses.
Upon graduation from your school, I plan to work as a practical engineer in a large manufacturing company or as a researcher at an institute. Participating in the development of advanced airplanes, space shuttles, and satellites would fulfill my aspirations. In the long term, I would like to become a professor in order to share my knowledge and experience and instruct the next generation of aeronautical engineers.

Dear _,
I thought much before I began to write the PS. However, holding the pen, I suddenly felt wordless because I have too much to say, too much to write. Standing on the crossroad of life, I determined to study abroad without any hesitations.
It was not the desire for the life overseas, but the pursuit of my professional study that aroused my idea to study abroad. I was longing for the further study and embedded understanding of the essence of Information Science, tasting its charm. Pocketing this interest, I came into the department of Beijing Forestry University. Through several years’ study there, I gradually realized that the modern information society needed not only the professional talents in information science, but also the embedded researches in this field in order to use it into every enterprise. Meanwhile, it is certain that the information science is just the developing trend in the future, which could historically change the ever familiar life style. Therefore, in the process of learning, I can taste its interest and challenge, with which I can keep abreast with the latest technology. Furthermore, I think it was valuable for me to contribute my youth into the Information Science, the most prospective enterprise in the future.
My ordinary score on my school report will tell you that I am not good at examinations. Those so-called “examination skills” are also strange to me. Instead, I emphasize the practical operations and the real needs of the society, expecting to learn the knowledge and technology that stands at the top of the period. Therefore, I got the latest knowledge mainly by reading large amount of English books and browsing the websites. Besides, I participated in many practical activities, in which I could use what I have learnt into practice.
In my sophomore year, just as other schoolmates were submerging themselves into the fairy world of PC games, I began my part time working experience by working as a technician on the website of a small company. Just at that exciting time, I found that it was very difficult to use the theories I learnt on class into the practical work. Trapped in the gap between the school and society, I collected and summarized much practical professional files from a series of websites and learnt the HTML language and the CSS design by myself. From the first attempt in the society, I realized that I got much from difficulties rather than smooth work. On designing the information part of the website, I could not find the perfect combination between the files. However, as a hard-nosed boy, I was not defeated by the difficulties, but very excited towards them. By classifying and summarizing the files I found on the websites, I finally solved the problem.
Taking advantage of my insistent efforts, I was finally kissed by an opportunity to participate in a developing project, in which I worked as a core assistant of my teacher to develop the Iptables module under Linux. From a theoretical point of view, the development of the module could be included in the basic theories of the operating system. However, it was another challenge for me because I was not familiar with the programming of system module. Finally, I found the related knowledge on a book named “Module Programming”. Thanks to my repeated attempts, times of failures, at last, presented me with the final success. Through this practice, I believe firmly that failure is the access to the success.
I had a dream when I was just a kid----becoming a member in Chinese Academy of Science, the pioneer of the science and technology in China. My senior year witnessed me to achieve my dream. Under the recommendation of my teacher, I got the opportunity to work with the professors in automation department of CAS on developing the interface based on the biometric authentication technology. Two weeks was a short time, but a harvest time for me. Through the exchange with the experts and professors and looking up large amount of books and related literatures in the library, my understanding on all the specifies BIOAPI interface, the design of the 类 and data structure and the biometric interfaces had largely deepened. Seeing the final success, the sweetest smile in the world blossomed on my face.
My assiduity in study and careful working attitude won the appreciation of the professors in CAS. Therefore, at the last period of my undergraduate study, I was recommended by them to complete my graduation design by participating in a graduate subject of Chinese Blog Search Engine.
As the assistant, I completed the access and storage of the Blog data by using C language and Perl database. With the help of my studying fellows, I finally designed a frame of the Blog Search Engine and learn many new technologies.
After graduation, I accepted the offer of working on Sina website, where I was mainly responsible for the batch installation of operating system, tailor of the software package, the safety configuration, the smooth running of the equipments on line, the test and recovery of various hardware failures. Meanwhile, I was in charge of the immediate response and disposal of the accidents and the exact maintenance of thousands of servers in the whole company.
As a system engineer in Sina website, there are a lot of things to do in the application process, operating system and network as well as in the hardware. We generally solve the problems by our own practical experience combining with the related professional literatures and the knowledge we have learnt.
Years of working experience made me realized clearly that it has still a long way to go to achieve my dream---becoming an expert in this field. I have to step out of the “flowers” coating me now for my achievements to the further study for the next station on the way of life. Therefore, I need a nutritious academic atmosphere.
It was my curiosity that pushed me onto the road of learning new technologies and it was my strong learning ability and capability that presented me with the current achievement. I believe that standing at the cross road of life after a few years further study, I will be more confident and stronger expectative for my future.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
My interest in the building structure can be traced back to my success in high school years, when I excelled my fellow classmates in physics and geometry. This not only fired off my interest in structural design but also helped to lay solid groundwork for my undergraduate studies in civil engineering, which heavily involved mechanics in physics and solid geometry.
With excellent scores in the compulsory national university entrance examination, I won acceptance in 1991 into the Beijing Polytech University, one of China’s top 10 engineering schools, particularly well-known for its structural engineering. For five years at this university, I received strict and thorough training in areas such as building structures, building materials. Soil mechanics and foundation, concrete and masonry structures, construction, steel structure and earthquake resistant structure. I also took every opportunity to participate in co-po work and projects commissioned by construction and design companies.
Opportunities abound for civil engineers and civil engineering students in China, which now houses the world’s fastest growing major economy. At every year’s job fair held on the campus of the Polytech University, more than 200 positions compete for 60-odd graduating students. Under such circumstances, undergraduate students in their fifth year are also in high demand for internship at various construction companies and design institutes. Virtually every student gets a full workload immediately upon starting the internship and assumes considerable responsibilities soon afterwards.
I became the luckiest among the lucky by winning a rare opportunity for any civil engineer: to participate in the design of the Beijing Western Railway Station, the largest urban structure in China up to date. This happened while I interned, along with five other schoolmates, at the Beijing Architectural Institute. This institute has designed virtually all the modern landmark buildings in China, including the famous Great Hall of the People and the Museum of Revolutionary History on the Tiananmen Square, the Beijing Railway Station and the Asian Games Village. It was on the strength of my academic merits that I got to enjoy these opportunities.
The Western station project in Beijing consisted of the mail hall (70,000 square meters), south wing building group (40,000 square meters) and north wing building group (35,000 square meters). My task was to assist in the design of a shopping centre in the south wing which had 16,000 square meters. I independently accomplished a quarter of the design for the whole building, mainly responsible for the foundation design, calculation and drawing of steel distribution of beam, floor, columns and concrete piles. I cherished this opportunity to apply the knowledge I had learned in the classroom to the real world problems and I worked with my utmost dedication.
I, however, soon found out that, even in this monumental project, design techniques applied in many cases left much to be desired. When treating the wind load, the earthquake force and the effect of frozen soil, historical data and intelligent estimates were used in place of accurate measuring. This phenomenon made me determined to improve my knowledge and skills in a graduate program that can teach sophisticated know-how, such as yours.
It regrettably turned out that the design of the mail hall was seriously flawed, which drew intense media attention nationwide. The structure sank two meters after completion. As experts continue to help the court determine who is responsible, I myself have been awed by this drama and kept researching it ever since it became known.
My tentative explanation, submitted to take into account the underground water’s power of buoyancy, even though the structure base was put below the waterbed. The structure floated until enough load was mounted. The proper construction method therefore should have involved artificial precipitation until the completion of structure.
Upon graduation in , I joined the Beijing Biggest Co., one of the four largest construction companies in China, and immediately took on management duties as an assistant manger at the construction site. I have supervised steel engineering, concrete engineering and platform engineering for there twenty-three story buildings in the Beijing DD residential area, a total of 60,000 square meters in apartments. In this capacity, I was compelled to learn management skills which had never been taught in the classroom. Although construction management is not what I foresee to be a lifetime pursuit, I executed my duty meticulously and creatively. I became the first construction site manager in the company to conduct experiments comparing box-weir maintenance and the traditional manual watering method. By using box-weir method, weak concrete and cracks in the concrete were eliminated. Through these important, albeit small, steps of improvement, I have derived immense satisfaction.
My vigorous academic training and exposure to intricate design problems and complex construction management issues has stood me in good stead professionally compared to my peers. My plan to further my career through advanced studies stems from self-confidence in my academic calibre and also a strong desire to solve design and construction problems encountered at work. I have researched your program based on the materials I have available to me and decided that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will be a shortcut for me to reach my goal. I request that you give my application for admission and financial support favourable consideration.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila

Dear _,
The presentation of environmental problems in the media was what initially sparked my interest in environmental studies. In school, I have always enjoyed geography and natural sciences, which led me to take the Geography Concours General, a particularly challenging exercise. I pursued my interest in taking this study further by selecting books from the recommended reading lists for courses on the environment, published on university websites. I particularly enjoyed Flannery's comprehensive account on global warming in 'The Weather Makers' as well as 'Heat, how we can stop the planet burning' by Monbiot for its daring propositions on how to cut carbon emissions. 'The Politics of the Environment: Ideas, Activism, Policy' by Neil Carter proved to be an excellent complement.
For an extended project, a requirement of the OIB, I worked in a group exploring carbon capture and storage as a solution for reducing carbon emissions. Researching such a controversial matter taught me to be patient and careful when selecting my sources. It also led me to contact Dr Ferey of the Lavoisier Institute in Versailles, a leading specialist in the field of microporous solids whose work I had first learned of in 'Science et Vie', one of the periodicals I receive regularly. Interviewing him was a particularly stimulating experience. More than this, our conversation made it clear that his team's discoveries can only find concrete uses through the type of approach I wish to study, combining sciences with knowledge of economic, social and political factors.
To understand what working on environmental problems is really like, I devoted three weeks of my summer holiday to a work experience placement at the French Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea. I was asked to write a synthesis and analysis of an European Commission report, concerning the implementation of water monitoring programmes throughout the European Union. This job helped me to develop my ability to extract the essential information out of extensive administrative documents and law texts and to manage my time carefully. I also learnt about the complex management of natural resources and became very interested in methods used in the evaluation of the ecological status of different water bodies. My work ended with an oral presentation, a task which led me to apply the presentation skills taught at school in front of a professional audience. I enjoyed this exercise for its challenging aspect and the positive feedback I received, which gave me enormous satisfaction. Daily discussions with my mentor, on subjects as various as the importance of a river's hydromorphology to aquatic life, the intricate workings of administration and our shared passion for cinema provided me with a more human and social experience of the workplace.
In addition to my academic interests, I also have a part-time job teaching English to younger students. I find this to be a challenging but rewarding task, which has helped me develop my ability to explain things in a clear fashion. I am also a member of my school's football team and play tennis on weekends.
I think that living in Shanghai and travelling throughout Asia with my parents has made me a more open-minded individual. Having been taught in a bilingual and bicultural school, I have learned to approach problems from different perspectives and thus reach a more objective overview. Hence, I am convinced that pursuing my studies in the UK, with its diverse population and internationally recognised universities, is the next logical step in my intercultural education and an excellent investment for my future professional career in the environmental sector.
Yours sincerely,
xuexila
