Dear _,

Literature can be seen as a microcosm of society, reflecting the irregularities and inequalities that are present in everyday life. As an English student, my initial interest in Law stemmed from its portrayal in fictional works such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird;’ however, it is the real life applications, as explored in the Times Law supplement and films like ‘Erin Brockovich,’ showing it to be both humanitarian and intellectually stimulating that affirmed my aspirations to study Law.

A levels have given me the chance to explore and develop some skills that would constitute a good Law student. In English Literature the ability to infer information and substantiate a conclusion is essential; the component in AS coursework to write a discursive essay “is King Lear a victim of circumstance or a tragic hero?” juxtaposed the emotive element of a mans downfall with detached facts. To arrive at a reasoned conclusion, it was necessary to look at the whole picture and read around a variety of critical opinions in order to build up a body of evidence in order to have an objective judgement. I am interested in the ever-changing nature of Law as in order to better serve society or fairly arbitrate cases with extenuating circumstances such as that of Kiranjit Ahluwalia; initially given life for killing her husband after enduring 10 years of abuse her sentence was later remanded.

Furthermore, I believe French is a beneficial subject, as through studying French, my awareness of the structure and wording of English has also increased; translating an article often takes much preparation and preciseness of language to comprehend the intended nuance of meaning. In addition, Business Studies requires a good knowledge of current affairs, reading around so as to have an opinion on the many factors that could influence a business, there was also the opportunity to study some aspects of Corporate Law; I was particularly interested in the changing attitudes of society as reflected by the gradual introduction of anti-discrimination Laws. Taking AS Psychology I studied topics clearly associated with the practicalities of Law, questioning the work by Loftus and Palmer on the reliability of eyewitness testimony; however, it also gave me an insight into the depth of human nature and the factors that can affect it. In particular, the work of Milgram showed me the need to question an individual’s behaviour and the reasons behind it.

In addition, to explore the possibility Law as a profession I completed a weeklong placement at a solicitors firm in Epsom. I was given the chance to shadow a solicitor, alongside further reading such as ‘The Law Machine’ by Marcel Berlins, this was invaluable in showing the realities and strenuousness of working in this field. The necessity of a dedicated and diligent approach in order to be successful greatly appealed to me and sustained my interest in Law.

In regards to extra curricular activities, at my sixth form I have been selected to be a prefect, a role requiring patience and persistence when working with younger years. In the Young Enterprise scheme, which involved creating and running a business, I was selected to be Managing Director by my peers for the tuition service we established. The post required talking to large groups of parents; in order to persuade them to become shareholders it was essential to talk both persuasively and confidently. Also I work regularly as a tutor for Explore Learning, teaching Maths and English to groups of young children, and do voluntary work for the Epsom and Ewell Bengali association: I help elder members of the community who don’t speak English fluently to fill in forms and write letters. These activities have all given me the opportunity to communicate with varying types of people in different circumstances, be it to clarify a principle, promote a business opportunity or provide instruction.

A Law degree is not restricted to furthering my aspirations of becoming a solicitor; it would provide a unique opportunity to explore a variety of issues that I feel passionate about. With the skills that I have already explored, I will strive to be a hardworking and successful undergraduate who will play a full part in university life.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Business and Management Personal Statement

My motivation to study Accounting /Information Business at degree level develops from my enjoyment from the single Business Studies at AS, currently converted into a double award at A2. For me, Business Studies has proved to be a fascinating subject, one that offers unlimited professional opportunities. My coursework case studies of both Norwich Union and Zenith Conservatories have given me an insight into complexities involved in operating such varied businesses, which I have found most intriguing, particularly those which relate to any financial considerations. Studying these business subjects at degree level will allow me to explore, in depth, a range of stimulating and interdisciplinary topics which I feel will give me a broader understanding towards the theories and practices of management in different

organizations in relation to a Financial/Information environment

At school, I have participated in many fund raising events, open days and further education fairs. I regularly collect for Save the Children charity and have subsequently become a member. Extra-curricular activities have incorporated drama productions of Grease, the promotion of the School production of West Side Story as part of my Marketing unit and a heavy involvement in the preparation and publishing of our year 11 yearbook. These were demanding tasks, which included budgeting our costs and materials to keep within a specific price limit. Although it was tough, I found it extremely satisfying, especially after seeing the final results. My AS Business course has given me an understanding of organizations as a whole, but experiences such as working on the Year book and duties in my part time job has allowed me to expand my knowledge and consciousness of such financial topics. My ICT skills have developed highly through doing Vocational A levels, which I feel is invaluable in the Business field. The main thing I have learnt is that for all businesses, financial matters are imperative; it is the core of any organization and being knowledgeable in such issues attracts me

My communication skills have been enhanced through my part time employment with River Island. My promotion to weekend footwear manager is developing knowledge of financial record keeping, problem solving, meeting weekly sales targets and teamwork awareness, which I feel can be used and put into practice whilst studying my preferred degree course

From the age of seven I attended a Bury St Edmunds Gymnastics club and competed at County, Regional and National levels. The feeling that I got when I played a role within the team to gain the gold medal was amazing, equal to the feeling when I achieved an individual gold medal as the top National around competitor. The realization of how important managing school work with a hobby which was not only physically demanding, but emotionally challenging has given me a understanding of how to be realistic, a skill which is valuable when planning certain business strategies

I believe that during my sixth form studies I have grown in both confidence and maturity, preparing me for the opportunity to study at university. My choice of AS and A levels, along with other academic and personal achievements have helped to consolidate and support my desire to study Business at degree level. I believe that I will be fully committed to successfully completing Accountancy /Information Business related degree and relish in any opportunities which are given to help me achieve my aspirations in a business related career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

The subjects of maths and physics have always fascinated me and I knew very early on that I wanted to pursue a career that involves science. As I progressed through school I found that I was much more interested in the application of the theory rather than the theory itself, and this is why I would like to study electronic engineering. I enjoy physics particularity as it can be observed in every aspect of life. From apples falling from trees to lightning, physics explains how the world works, and engineers throughout history have used their knowledge of physics to overcome problems that they face. The Romans built aqueducts to supply their cities with water; William Thomson helped lay the transatlantic telegraph cables that made communication between Europe and the Americas viable.

I also studied Advanced Higher Music last year at school. I am very interested in the use of electronics in music, and I wrote a project on the physics of the electric guitar. This interest prompted me to spend a week of work experience at Wolfson Microelectronics, a local company that engineer integrated circuits for many high profile audio equipment firms. During my stay I was assigned the task of designing and assembling a circuit to investigate the voltage offset and noise created by an operational amplifier. I was also introduced to a silicon microphone, a development which is sure to be significant in the future of electronics, and introduced to all the main stages in the development of a microchip, from design to failure analysis. My forthcoming Advanced Higher Physics investigation will be concerned with the properties of op-amps, the variables that affect these properties, and their applications.

In June, I attended a week-long Headstart course held at the University of Cambridge. We were given a task to assemble and programme a robot to navigate a course, using both dead-reckoning and sensors; I was part of the winning team. The course was thoroughly enjoyable and confirmed that engineering was the subject for me. I have applied to spend my gap year working in the engineering industry, through the Year in Industry scheme. I hope that I will gain invaluable experience of the industry in which I would like to build my career in, and this will no doubt help me understand better how what I learn at university relates to real-world applications.

I play the violin, guitar and bagpipes all to a high standard. I am a first violin in the main school orchestra and the chamber orchestra, lead guitar in the school “Rhythm and Blues” band and a senior member of the pipe band. I hold the rank of Corporal in my school cadet force, and I am a young leader at my Scout troop. Balancing these numerous extra-curricular activities with my academic work has forced me to develop my time management skills. My involvement in both cadets and Scouts has also greatly added to my team working and leadership skills. I was the leader of the team that won the Edinburgh Area Scout camping competition in , and we finished in the top 5 in the country. Currently, I am working towards both my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award and my Queen's Scout award.

I also have a keen interest in computers, assembling my first at the age of twelve, and I am currently teaching myself Mandarin Chinese, something that I would like to continue studying throughout university and a skill that I believe will be very useful in the future, especially in the electronics industry. I keep up to date with the latest scientific news in by reading both Physics Review and New Scientist.

I believe that studying electronic engineering is the best way for me to apply my accumulated knowledge of maths and physics and I look forward to a career that will constantly present me with new challenges.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Since a very young age - where all my friends were aspiring to become firemen, astronauts and rockstars - I have always dreamed of wearing a suit to work. I don't know what it was, but I guess I just identified all these men as being the real players in the world - driving fast cars and hitting it off with beautiful women. These guys - the lawyers, entrepreneurs and accountants - were all sipping champagne and living the high life. Of course, you don't have to wear a suit to be making money (look at Steve Jobs, for example), it's not all fun and games, and you have to be damn good at what you do, but my ambitions have remained the same. This is what I want to be, but money is no longer the sole object, in my opinion.

This has stemmed from my upbringing, where every morning CNN is put on the TV, stock portfolios lie in messy stacks around the house and political conversation runs rife at the dinner table. Every day I would hear my father talking about his business ventures and garnered a great interest. To me, the business world seemed entirely different to our regular one: it was a grandiose battlefield of thousands of opposing teams – a vicious free for all where the only objective was to win. Language like “slaughtering the competition” was frequently used, and I instantly knew that this game was more intense than any sport, more exciting than any video game and more fulfilling than any hobby. I once even tried my hand at business of my own – selling gumballs at school – which, to my surprise, was rather successful, if short-lived (regulated into the ground).

By the time I was beginning my IGCSE year I was absolutely itching to take a Business & Management course. I felt a lot of it come naturally to me, remembering all the terms and advice I had heard from my father. All along it was extremely satisfying to know that whilst I would hardly use anything I had learnt in math’s (unless I need to know the exact angle that my ladder is at), no matter what profession I would take, I could apply this. I took part in stock competitions, both in and outside of school, in an attempt to better my understanding of the seemingly confusing concept of stock exchange.

One of the most interesting aspects of business for me is international markets, which then extends into economics. I have often been told that one of my most valuable qualities is that I am tri-cultural, coming from an extremely interesting background. I have lived in Spain my entire life, with an American mother and English father, who is a chartered accountant and previously owned a successful record label; he now sells property on the real estate market. I feel that this is where much of my business background originates. Another interesting quality that has rubbed off my parents is Buddhism. Whilst am not a firm believer in the Buddhist philosophies, I find many of them extremely compelling.

Over the course of the IB, I have done much to advance myself in the field of public speaking – a skill I find to be of increasing importance in the modern business world. Last year I took the position of president of the Toastmasters International Youth Leadership program and earned my certificate. This will be the second year in which I will be attending the annual IMUN conference, where I have signed up for the position of chair, and if not, will represent the World Bank. Last year I represented the highly unspoken country of Timor Leste. Over the course of the summer I attended the prestigious GYLC conference, where I talked to [insert names here] and attended speeches such as [name]_- Mastering the Challenges of International Business, by Dr J. Joseph Kim, CEO of VGX pharmaceuticals. During a simulation global summit I represented France, and was appointed to the digital divide, e-commerce and free trade commissions, where I advocated the view of protectionism. Throughout both of these conferences I spoke in front of hundreds of other scholars, which, by the end, felt perfectly natural and comfortable. These valuable experiences gave me an invaluable insight into the running of governments and their regulating businesses as well as allowing me to further advance my public speaking skills. I have also been appointed the role of head prefect – which entailed an ISCO head prefect training course - and member of the student council in my school, and lend a hand in managing and working in our school tuck shop, which have all helped hone my management abilities.

Whilst all of these provided me with excellent skills, over the summer I had the privilege to gain work experience from one of the leading law firms in Europe and the largest and most highly regarded in Spain – Garrigues. This allowed me to gain insight into how an international company is run and managed. This also demonstrated to me what it is like to work as a lawyer in a large firm and educated me on the different parts of law and what they entail and allowed me to use my near-fluent Spanish in a work environment. The department I found most interesting was that of civil law – more specifically, litigation. I was brought to a court in order to view a labour dispute, which I found extremely interesting.

Overall, I have a rather diverse set of hobbies and interests, but my main passion is computers. I have been using computers since the age of 5, when I mainly used them for learning. Now, I feel I have become extremely proficient with the Windows Operating System to a near professional level, which I often use to assist my family and friends with technical problems. I am also very proficient (though less so) with a Mac system, and am now learning the more technical Linux. For a long time I studied in order to be able to build a computer from scratch, and have modified individual components. I find computers extremely satisfying as there is always going to be a problem, and therefore a solution, which may not always be obvious. I intend to continue onto learning the programming language Python, which I have introduced myself to over the summer.

Apart from this, I have branched off into different computer hobbies, such as graphic design, where I have learn to Adobe Photoshop to an excellent standard, and am now able to create graphics from scratch. I have used this to help design and do graphical work for the last 2 school yearbooks for which I received an award, as well as create graphics such as CD covers for a friend who does musical work and create posters. I also practice disk jockeying and also put this into practice where I controlled the lights and music for a concert for said friend. I would love to carry on these interests in university, possibly contributing to the college radio station and publications.

Whilst I do not consider myself a sporty person, I have previously competed in intramural field hockey, and socially play paddle and normal tennis. I jog nearly every day; however, it is just as much for meditating purposes as to keep fit. However, since gaining my Red Cross first aid license last year, I have found myself a more useful purpose on the playing field.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I am applying to study a degree in economics principally because of the diversity of both the subject and its applications, and because I find it fascinating and challenging at the same time. Having studied the subject at A-level, I believe that the possible depths to which it may be studied are almost endless, and as such, the number of real-life situations to which it is relevant is similarly vast. For example, the area of economics in which I am most interested is the study of the ways in which monetary and fiscal policies affect society as a whole. For this reason, I found the Public Choice theory particularly engaging. In the future, I hope to gain employment in the banking or financial sector, and I think that a course as flexible as economics would be of great benefit to this.

Recently, I have participated in the Bank of England’s ‘Target 2.0’ challenge. From this, I not only improved skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication and analytical skills, but also learnt about the consequences that a seemingly small decision, such as the lowering of the interest rate by a quarter of one percent, can have on just about everyone. Another aspect of the project that I enjoyed was the way in which all of our team members’ research and work came together at the end to form the whole, and enabled us to come to a conclusion. I would very much like to have the opportunity to study this area, among others concerning the interest rate and monetary policy, in greater depth. I am enthusiastic about the subject, and a highly motivated student, and I therefore think that I would be well suited to studying economics at university level.

My hobbies mostly centre around music; I sing, play the piano to grade four standard, and have also composed music for keyboard-based instruments. I have found that the more knowledge of music, and its structures, that I have gained, the more insights into popular music I have acquired, and can then enjoy it on many more levels. I think that this holds true for many subjects: the more understanding you have of something, the more you can enjoy it. I also like to get involved in sports, such as swimming, in my spare time, as I find them a great way to unwind and have fun at the same time!

In secondary school, I held a position of responsibility as a prefect. I also sang soprano in the school choir, which again helped me to hone my skills of teamwork and co-operation. Prior to beginning sixth form, I spent a summer working as a volunteer in a scheme run for children with disabilities, which was both a lot of fun and very rewarding. Although working with some of the children was demanding and required the ability to adjust and adapt quickly, I would definitely say that it was worth it and would love to do it again. In addition, I currently have a part-time job in a retail environment. Because of this, I believe that I am able to communicate and solve problems more effectively. I have also gained understanding of the worlds of business and commerce within the context of a large company.

I have put serious consideration into my choice of course applications, and believe that I would be able to contribute both academically and socially to university life.

Yours sincerely,

1、Homestay

Dear _,

My first impression on computers as a machine has always impressed me. And I have been motivated to know more about computing which eventually lead me to a new passion. Since computers are broad my passions lead me specifically to networking and how data is transferred over the net. At college I had the chance to understand how it all works and fortunately I did but it also gave me craving for more which took me to the internet for research but was not enough.

In the last two years I have worked as an assistant in an internet shop helping and fixing their problems gave me much needed experience to help in my future career. I have to admit going to study for my passion in university has been a dream in a distance while I was in Kenya, but since I came to UK that dream got a little bit nearer. Although I didn’t have the funds to take me to university while I was in Kenya I was saving bit by bit to take me there.

While I was in secondary school and college I have always been hard working and have always been the top 5 students in class which means with the right equipments and teaching materials it won’t be hard for me at all.

My main aim of studying is to be more knowledgeable in software, hardware and networks and eventually work my way up the ladder to see me through to postgraduate which definitely means I am more respectable and more marketable. After successfully joining university what will drive me is my passion and that my family will look forward to having their son getting the opportunity to be what he wants to be. According to me there is no room for failure and my destination is getting a PhD which is going to make a role model for my future children and my siblings.

To make me blend in with the new hard task I have prepared to make a timetable to effectively manage my time since am a fun of sports namely going to the gym to help me train my brain and my body as well.

I am looking forward with to the challenges that studying in a university for a degree in computer network will bring.

Yours sincerely,
